What is Smellicopter and The Way does it Work?
Researchers and scientists have an interest in developing devices
that will sniff the chemicals and navigate within the air to locate disaster
survivors like gas leaks, explosions, etc. But most man-made sensors aren't
sensitive or fast enough to locate or process-specific smells. During this
direction, scientists have developed Smellicopter.

It is an autonomous drone that uses a live antenna from a moth to
navigate towards smells. Additionally, it also can sense and avoid obstacles in
its way while flying. Researchers have also attached two plastic wings on the
rear of the drone, to assist it to fly continuously within the air. Smellicopters
mimic how moth searches for smells and don't need any help from the researchers
to look for odors. It begins its search by moving towards the left for a
selected distance and if nothing passes a selected smell threshold, it moves
towards the proper for an equivalent distance. Once the odor is detected by
the Smellicopter, it changes its flying pattern to succeed in it.

It also can avoid obstacles with the assistance of 4 infrared sensors which measures what's around it 10 times each second. If an obstacle comes within eight inches (20 cms) of the drone, it changes its direction by getting to the subsequent stage of its cast-and-surge protocol.
